Part Six

This is an excerpt of the 1970 (published in 1975) novel The Female Man, by Joanna Russ. The novel is widely seen as the most influential, and one of the first feminist Science Fiction texts, depicting four women in four parallel worlds, divided in history and time, who are brought together by one of them to form a secret society. The excerpt plays in Jeannine’s world, where the Great Depression has never ended, and The Second World War hadn’t happened, because Hitler was assassinated in 1936.

The morning passage of cleaning goes on for another two pages, without anything happening, oblivious to the increasingly restless reader, seeing her life passing in front of her.
